Project Details

What we have done is to use relatively simple and cheap equipment to create a secure way for students to easily gain access to Halls of Residence and for administration personnel to, at a glance, be able to keep track of students and visitors. By keeping track we do not mean on a granular level, but just whether or not the student or visitor is on/off hall or whether a visitor has stayed past the 1 AM cut off time for visitors to be on hall.

The hardware we have used is inexpensive and easily obtainable, These are:

  • USB Webcam(any)
  • Raspberry Pi
  • Breadboard
  • LED Light
  • Desktop/Laptop Computer with Windows OS
All that is required is an ID card with a barcode. No need to have hid capable cards (cards with electronic chips). So a student can even use their driver's licence to gain access to the hall, as long as the licence was previously registered under their name.
